Counting Your Calories

Microtracking

Counting the calories of a meal might be a frustrating and complicated task for a lot of people,  let’s break it down to its simplest forms.

Technically speaking, a calorie is the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water to 1 °C. We use calories to track how much energy we spent (or gained) during the day.

Calories are usually taken from 4 main sources:
Protein: every gram of protein  you eat is equal to 4 calories (after digestion)
Carbohydrates (aka carbs): every gram of carbs you eat is equal to 4 calories
Fats: every gram of fat you eat is equal to 9 calories• Alcohol: every gram of alcohol is equal to 7 calories (varies a little depending on the type of alcohol)

A Big Mac has 25 g of protein, 46 g of carbs, and 28 g of fat equaling: 25*4 + 46*4 + 28*9 = 536 calories.
